Silphium  laciniatum. The bright yellow flowers with hairy-bristly stems are similar to sunflowers. They tend to align foliage north and south to present a minimum surface to the noon sunshine. Great for border backs. Grows 5-9' tall by 1½-3' wide. Blooms July to September. Full sun is best. Plant in well-drained soil. Zones 3-8.
